September 11, 2012 - Condition 1 May Be Approaching

Hi all - today was an uninteresting day because we didn't get to fly, but a super interesting day due to the weather.  As I talked about in my last post, the weather was going to go "down hill" in the next few days, and so we wouldn't be able to fly.  Around 4 pm we were watching out the window and noticed that you couldn't really see the building next door, which probably is 40 feet or so away.

Still officially Condition 2, but super crazy!  That blob you see behind the van is a building (the Chalet).  Cam took this picture, which I think is one of the best ones I have ever had taken of me, and he deserves props for freezing his hands off to do it.

The weather conditions when the above picture was taken.
We had been in Condition 2 all day, but Condition 1 means that visibilities are less than 100 feet, wind chills are less than -100F, or winds are blowing at greater than 55 knots (60 mph) for at least a minute.  Given that I was watching the conditions go down hill for awhile I was wondering if they would call Condition 1.  Condition 1 is important because you have to stay in the building you are in and cannot leave until conditions improve.

At 5 pm we were discussing heading to the galley to make sure we got dinner, when we got an email that said "Condition 1 May Be Approaching", and basically, you need to hightail it home or the galley or else risk staying wherever you're at.  So we packed up the lab and were out lickety split to head to the galley to grab some dinner.  We ate that quick and headed back to the dorms.

Condition 1 was never officially called, but if what I witnessed wasn't nearly Condition 1 I'm impressed.  Well, I'm still impressed.  Nick and I stood out on the stairway to our building for about 10 minutes watching the weather, and it was impressive.  There were times when we couldn't see vehicles parked 40 feet from us.  The galley was probably 150 feet away, and we definitely couldn't see that a lot of the time.  In the 10 minutes we stood out there though my legs got super cold, and I had to rush inside and walk up and down the hallways a few times to restore feeling.  I would've been much better off with wind pants on.

Nick enjoying the weather.
These vans were about 40 feet away.

You can sort of make out a person heading back from the galley.
The galley has disappeared!

Nick braving the elements.

The weather is much better now, and Paul, Peter, and I made an attempt at playing volleyball, but no one is there!  Such is life.  On a brighter note, we're hoping conditions improve enough to be able to fly in the next day or so, as the forecast looks much better.

Here's video Nick took when we were standing outside the dorm:  https://www.facebook.com/v/10151086653124217

and video I took as well:
